Bikers for Books Will be Collecting Books For Schools Sunday at Latino Day with the Lugnuts
Bikers for Books which is a 501c(3) non profit organization led by Badge Velaquez that collects and donates books to children and schools, will be at the Latino Day with the Lugnuts to collect new and gently used books. They will then in turn distribute them in a effort to raise awareness and promote literacy by establishing a presence in the community and networking with others to do the same.
Bikers for Books is a network of bikers and other reading enthusiasts working together in an effort to raise reading awareness by distributing books, partnering with school districts and by speaking to kids about the importance at any age of good reading skills. Please check out their website: http://bikersforbooks.com/about-b4b/

Footprints of Michigan led by Geronimo Lerma and his team will be at Latino Day with the Lugnuts collecting new and gently used footwear to distribute to the needy, homeless and veterans around the State. This group does incredible work serving populations that often goes unnoticed sadly.
Footprints of Michigan, Inc. was established in 2014 after attending a street walk with a local organization in Lansing, Michigan. I noticed a young homeless man in desperate need of shoes; his duct-taped soles were worn and tattered. A street walk participant contacted her husband and he promptly delivered a size 13, gently used, pair of shoes. The young man’s face lit up as he threw his old, worn pair of shoes in the trash and it filled my heart with hope and joy…. and so, the idea began.
Cafecito Caliente hopes you will bring at least a pair of shoes even if your just dropping them off this Sunday. If you need arrangements to have some shoes picked up, Cafecito is willing. Here is the Footprints website: https://footprintsofmichigan.org/footprints-of-michigan
Concert In The Park to Feature Jr. Aldaco And The Midwest All-Starts July 24, 2019
The popular Concert in the Park Series that features a variety of musical entertainment will feature Tejano music once again this year. Francis Park will be the venue for Jr. Aldaco and the Midwest All-Stars on Wednesday, July 24, 2019.
The band is gaining heavy airplay in different parts of the country with their recent hit “Basarte con Locura”. Lansing Parks and Recreation which oversees the music series has made it a point to add a different Tejano band each year and much like last year, it should be a packed out park.

The Lansing Lugnuts officially launched a new era directly connected to the Hispanic/Latino community here in Lansing for the 2019 season. On Friday, May 3-5 and again on Sunday, August 18th during the annual Latino Day with the Lugnuts coordinated by Cafecito, the team will switch uniforms to the Lansing Loco’s. A big three day weekend is planned with vendors, food trucks, Tejano music, a baseball clinic for kids just to name a few things. With some history, a birthday celebration and fireworks mixed in, it promises to be a weekend to remember.
A total of 72 teams across Minor League baseball are set to participate in the “Copa de la Diversión,” or “Fun Cup,” a season-long event series in 2019. The San Antonio Missions will become the San Antonio Flying Chanclas, Corpus Christi Hooks become the Raspas, and the Fresno Grizzles become the Fresno Lowriders. The Lansing Lugnuts decided to jump aboard with a similar rally cry from the traditional “Let’s Go Nuts” to “Vamos Locos” cry that you will hear this season.
A group of folks from the local Latino community were invited by the Lansing Lugnuts to come up with a plan to not only celebrate the culture, but to have some fun at the park. Latinos make up over 25% of Major League Baseball, so it only made sense to the Lugnut team to develop a relationship with the Latino community. Mark your calendars for May 3-5 for the Cinco de Mayo Celebration and again for August 18th with the “Latino Day with the Lugnuts”.
