Council Member At-Large:
The Lansing Mall has gone through many changes since it’s opening in July of 1969. Once a haven for teens and shoppers alike, the “food court” became a popular destination for many people once they were done shopping the National chain stores like JC Penney, Macy’s, and Footlocker.
It’s 2023 and neither Macy’s or Footlocker keep a storefront there, but Angie Cabrera and her husband Pedro have created what has to be a go to place for Mexican food in a space that many have forgotten. Positioned right next to the Lansing Mall Food Court, they have been serving up dishes to friends and family for years. They finally took the step to have their own restaurant with a Grand Opening on April 8, 2023.
Family owned and operated, we hope that you will support this new restaurant and their authentic style Mexican food. Hopefully

Thanks to all who attended the Tercer Jueves: “Hispanic Business Excellence Program (HBeX)” last night. I was especially happy to see Hope Lopez along with so many other professionals and business owners from Saginaw, Flint, Howell, Brighton ,Detroit etc.
Hope who works for Dart Bank as a Treasurery Management Support Specialist, represents the future as a younger generation looks to push Hispanic Latinos to even higher standards than the previous generation did.
Much thanks to Mark Moreno, President of the Michigan Hispanic Chamber, Raquel Adam and their team for providing a night of entertainment, information and of course the networking. A special thanks to Traci Ruiz who always seems to be a step ahead of me preparing the way and was instrumental in putting all of the different entities together to make last night happen.

Cynthia Martinez is a Michigan-based, Latina filmmaker:
“First Voice Generation“ will be showing at the Capital City Film Festival in Lansing. Latinos are more likely to be first generation college students than any other racial or ethnic group. 44 percent of Latino students are the first in their family to attend college. Yet, Latinos receive the lowest average amount of aid when compared to all students. First Voice Generation, is a social justice film that brings awareness to first generation Latino students and the challenges they face when becoming the first in their families to attend college.
Film Synopsis
First Voice Generation follows the stories of three Latino high school students in Holland, Michigan, during an unprecedented global pandemic year. Each student struggles with their identity growing up in a historically Dutch community, feeling that they don’t belong because they are children of Mexican immigrants. They each dream of being the first in their family to go college, but a year of challenges ensue with virtual learning, and the realization that the cost of affording college seems impossible.
I started production of the film during the 2020 pandemic and when racial tensions were high across the country with the death of George Floyd. The Latino students in the film share their lived experiences with racism in their community and their schools during this time. I am attaching the trailer to the film, our movie poster, and a link to the Capital City Film festival for tickets. First Voice Generation recently won the jury award at the Central Michigan International Film Festival in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Please share with you organization, students, and networks.
