We want to thank all those who have registered for the Running La Vida Loca 5k. In 2014 our Hispanic Chamber held a one time golf outing that raised $3,000 for the Migrant Camp Program at Michigan State University (MSU) and that amount became our goal for this 5k race. Happy to say that we reached our goal this by writing a check for $3,500 to the Migrant Camp Program.
Much thanks to those that registered, donated and loved the fact that we supported a cause that to many of us including me can relate to. Although I myself never worked in the fields, my parents grew up in Edcouch and Elsa Texas leaving for Michigan in 1957. We still have relatives in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). Thanks to the efforts of the Migrant Camp Program at MSU, there are many young people who not only chose to come up to Michigan for an education, many of these students have chosen to build a life here. They come from not only Texas, but Florida and several states that the MSU program recruits from. The shirt and design was actually set up for a race in 2021, but when I read about the troubles in the RGV, I called a friend of mine at the CAMP Program and asked if I could put this together. He agreed and shared a couple stories (without names of course), and we decided to use the design since it was ready.
Cafecito Caliente covered Facebook ads, shipping materials and labor. I will create another post mentioning that we know that people want to have the shirt and medal either before or real close to the end of Hispanic Heritage Month so we will be ending our race this coming Sunday night so that we can get the next batch of shirts printed and shipped. We went through multiple missteps getting our shipping materials, postage paid through a new shipping app for us and apologize for any delays in shipping. I don’t envy shirt companies.
Much thanks again please feel free to use the hashtag #RLVL2020 on social media so that we can find any photos you wish to share. Thank you all for Running La Vida Loca and please remember to Like our page for future 5k races as we have 4 setup for 2021!
