Mark your calendar to welcome Nora Chapa Mendoza at Casa de Rosado, November 10- December 16, 2018. Opening reception on November 10th from 1 to 5pm. Nora Chapa Mendoza has worked for more than 40 years as a full time visual artist, a painter who served the state as a member of the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, for 10 years and continues to find time to educate and mentor young people through a variety of programs in Detroit.
Nora has been recognized with numerous awards, including “The Governor’s Arts Award – Michigan Artist of the Year” in 1999. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work is represented among many important collections around the world. She is currently an active member of the Lawrence Street Gallery, in Ferndale, MI.
In 2008, her works were exhibited in the International Forum for Plastic Arts in Sharm El Sheakh Egypt, and in Cuba for two solo exhibitions, and Comandante Fidel Castro was presented with one of her paintings, “Comaneros del Trabajo” depicting indigenous women workers. Nora was also one of the eight artists selected to work on the $6million renovation of the Detroit Music Hall.
Among her collectors are such notables as Aretha Franklin and Edward James Olmos. Corporate collectors include Ford offices – Rockefeller Plaza in New York, United Farm Workers of America in Cesar Chavez La Paz, California, Edison Plaza in Michigan and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan. She has been published in many books, the latest of which is “Contemporary Chicano Art – Color and Culture for a New America by George Vargas”, published and released in January 2010.
