The Latino Advisory Committee recently met and made the decision that should help several students seeking to further their future by attending a college or university. As a committee they decided to award 3 scholarships worth $1,000. The scholarships are awarded to Latino students in the Lansing School District.
While the Lansing School District identifies the students who are eligible, the Committee itself chooses the scholarship winners as they raise their own monies to fund these scholarships. They will be awarded at the 44th Annual Latino Achievement Ceremony to held at Lansing Eastern High School located at 626 Marshall St. in Lansing, Michigan. The Ceremony itself looks much like a Graduation complete with cap and gown, but offers a certificate of achievement from the Lansing School District and the Latino Advisory Committee.
The Committee usually offers $2,000 to $2,500 each year, but were able to raise the amount awarded thanks to some charitable giving. Each year since 2012, the Committee puts together a Program Booklet that highlights the different supporters of the LAC and is handed out at the Ceremony.
The Latino Advisory Committee was created in April of 1972 to recognize, educate and empower parents to take a proactive role in the educational and personal development of their children. We work in partnership with the Lansing School District to advocate for Latino families and their students throughout the calendar year.
