Michigan Indígena/Chicanx Community Alliance (MICCA) is partnering with the Michigan Alliance for Latino Education and Culture (MALEC) and Casa de Rosado to host the 2018 Día de Los Muertos celebration. The goal with this partnership is to connect the university, its resources, and students with community spaces and making beyond the university’s walls, as well as to drive these resources toward our community and its growth.
On Friday, the opening ceremony and main reception will take place, and we would love for you to come out and make Día de Los Muertos a day of joyful honor, remembrance, and celebration. The event will feature poetry, folklórico, live mariachi, and other performances from local artists, as well as pan de muerto, cempasúchil (marigolds), and a public ofrenda dedicated to ancestors.
There will also be an exhibition of ofrendas made by community members and student organizations, including MICCA, which will run through the weekend. Some of these ofrendas honor the lost lives of trans women of color and murdered and missing indigenous women(#MMIW), protest the atrocity of border separations and camps, call for an end to state-sponsored police violence, and refuse the end of DACA.
