WKAR continues its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month by offering a free screening of the “A Song for Cesar” Documentary. With a “Question and Answer” session to follow, the evening will begin at 7:00pm.
A Song for Cesar, a documentary film by Abel Sanchez and Andres Alegria, presents a unique view of the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez and the farmworker movement. The film tells a previously untold story about the musicians and artists – including Joan Baez, Maya Angelou, and Carlos Santana, among others – who dedicated their time, creativity and even reputations to peacefully advance Cesar Chavez’s movement to gain equality and justice for America’s suffering farmworkers. The documentary also explores other facets of Cesar’s life – from childhood to his final days – revelations that, until now, have not been shared on screen.
This free event will be in-person at WKAR studios on the campus of MSU and will also be streamed.

Cafecito Caliente has received permission from the producers at Latino Public Broadcasting to publish the series called Latino Essentials. The series which can be found on the PBS website, is a collection of unique and insightful short portraits and stories about Latinos who are serving as essential workers in a wide variety of jobs and/or services across the United States, even as the COVID 19 pandemic continues to disproportionately impact Latino and other communities of color. We will publish these one at a time and our hope is that you will watch, cheer and support those that kept America going.
The first video I watched was Melanie from Miami as she navigates teaching her students online and caring for her three-year-old daughter. What struck me was the story included how she was dealing with personal heartbreak while attempting to lead her family while providing an income. Covid for her, only added to the cliche “the struggle is real”. She lived it and continues to survive!
