LUCERO Guest Speaker Series

LCC’s LUCERO mentorship program is always looking for guest speakers to connect with current Latino students to share stories of their academic and professional triumphs and overcoming challenges. LUCERO stands for Latinos Unidos Con Energia, Respeto, y Orgullo, and is designed to foster a positive and inclusive environment on campus by centering the experiences of Latino/a/x students. Kick off the weekend with a Health & Wellness Seminar focused on promoting well-being within the Hispanic community. Gain valuable insights and resources to enhance your health journey.

In what will be an inspiring evening of conversation, wisdom and ideas on how to live life, five individuals from the Hispanic Latino community gather to share their strategies for successful health and wellness.

Location will be at Lansing Community College in the Michigan Room. 422 N. Washington Sq. Lansing, Michigan 48933.

“¡Juntos, Todo es Posible!” (Together, all things are possible!) will be the theme for this year’s Cesar E. Chavez celebration held annually by the Lansing Community College. This will be an afternoon of celebrating Cesar Chavez’ legacy through an engaging call to action, performances, food, and more!

Set to take place Tuesday, March 26th 3pm – 4pm inside the Cesar Chavez Learning Center, Arts & Sciences Building 1313 located on the Campus of Lansing Community College. There is no registration necessary and open to the community with no cost to attend.

The Cesar Chavez Learning Center’s LUCERO program activities are free and open to all registered LCC students. Programming is focused on embracing Latino students, connecting them to the LCC community and equipping them excel through:

• Mentorship
• Cultural Celebrations
• Leadership Opportunities
• Academic Support
• Skill Development

Moreover, LUCERO is a dedicated support program committed to:

• Fostering a positive and inclusive environment, particularly for students of color, with a specific focus on Latino students;
• Creating a strong and positive sense of community among Latino students;
• Celebrating and embracing the rich cultural diversity within the Latino community; and
• Providing opportunities for students to build strong connections with each other and with LCC, enabling them to connect and engage meaningfully within the broader college community.

Press Release: Dear Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan Stakeholders,

Dr. Felipe Lopez Sustaita, Executive Director of the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan (HLCOM), has announced he accepted a position at Lansing Community College. His last day with the commission will be May 14, 2021. Felipe has led the HLCOM for almost five years, since July of 2016.

While serving as Executive Director of the HLCOM, Felipe founded the Statewide Hispanic/Latino College Graduation Ceremony and worked with the commission to award approximately 100 scholarships to college and university students across the state. Felipe also drove over 50,000 miles to conduct community outreach and recently played an active role in ensuring that the Hispanic/Latino community has access to COVID-19 vaccines.

Felipe said that it has been an honor and privilege to serve in this role. He went on to say that the best part of the job was all the people he had the opportunity to meet across the state and the chance to cultivate the young professionals who he worked with: Daniel Carreon-Camberos, Jose Luis Mendez, Ana Manzano, Clarissa Mezquitic, Janet Ibarra and Dr. Patrica Jaimes.

Felipe will be starting his new role as Associate Dean of Student Support at Lansing Community College on May 17, 2021. In his role he will be leading seven departments which include Adult Resource Center, the Center for Student Access, Counseling, Veteran and Military Affairs Department, Fostering Stars, Office of Student Compliance and Global Student Services.

We thank Felipe for his invaluable service to the statewide Hispanic/Latino community and look forward to seeing the impact of his continued work at Lansing Community College.
