Together with LEAP there are 10 organizations including Cafecito, that spent time developing the application and review process and we will be scoring the applications. The scoring criteria is on the LEAP website and the deadline to apply is August 5, 2020. 30% of the funding MUST go to minorities, veterans and women. Quite a few non profits will be chosen as well. Its estimated that 1 in 6 applicants will receive an award.
Cafecito is available to help anyone, either by phone call, Zoom meeting or stopping in at your place of business until midnight August 5, 2020, day or night. Please don’t hesitate to ask us for help day or night. I UNDERSTAND THE SCORING CRITERIA. So many times as minorities and small businesses we believe we don’t have a chance at grants or loans yet this time we have a voice. Let me know if Cafecito Caliente can help!

The Latino Advisory Committee (LAC) proudly announces the 49th Annual Latino Achievement Ceremony. This year the Ceremony will take place in the Eastern Auditorium beginning at 5:30pm. Eastern is located at 626 Marshall Ave. This building was formerly known as Pattengill.
The annual tradition of celebrating Latino students graduating from the Lansing School District began in April1972 as a way of recognizing a population that graduated less than 50% of those enrolled.
We the members of the Latino Advisory Committee asks the community to join us in congratulating the students of Eastern, Everett, Sexton and Woodcreek from the Lansing School District as they reach a milestone that 40-50 years ago, was not always the easiest to attain for that generation.
Historically, the LAC gives away up to $3,000 in scholarships to students each year at the Ceremony. More details to come. Looking for sponsors in which 100% of the proceeds will go to scholarships awarded on this night.

Latino Advisory Committee Announces $3,000 In Scholarships To Be Offered To Latino Students
The Latino Advisory Committee recently met and made the decision that should help several students seeking to further their future by attending a college or university. As a committee they decided to award 3 scholarships worth $1,000. The scholarships are awarded to Latino students in the Lansing School District.
While the Lansing School District identifies the students who are eligible, the Committee itself chooses the scholarship winners as they raise their own monies to fund these scholarships. They will be awarded at the 44th Annual Latino Achievement Ceremony to held at Lansing Eastern High School located at 626 Marshall St. in Lansing, Michigan. The Ceremony itself looks much like a Graduation complete with cap and gown, but offers a certificate of achievement from the Lansing School District and the Latino Advisory Committee.
The Committee usually offers $2,000 to $2,500 each year, but were able to raise the amount awarded thanks to some charitable giving. Each year since 2012, the Committee puts together a Program Booklet that highlights the different supporters of the LAC and is handed out at the Ceremony.

There are over 160 Latino owned businesses in the Greater Lansing Area including about 35 Mexican restaurants. The purpose of the organization is to create conversation about the business owners needs and perhaps identify resources that are available to businesses themselves. The hope is to not only identify those Latino owned businesses but to recognize them in a way that promotes them to the community.
One of the ideas that came up was that when a business opened, why not celebrate with a Grand Opening? Not only invite the community, but also other business owners.
That being said, next September, the Northside Barber Shop will be celebrating 15 years in business. So perhaps we could plan an Open House celebrating the Anniversary? Once again, invite the community, but supporting other businesses not only helps them, but also can be reciprocated from amongst the group.
Make no mistake, there is no budget as say a Business Association might have. But, word of mouth and social media gives us all a chance to help spread the word making the general public aware of new and existing businesses.
Bottom line is that we need a Business Association to not only promote our businesses but to also bring resources and even strategies into running our businesses. At this point, Cafecito Caliente will take the lead and run it under our umbrella with the goal of eventually spinning it off into its own entity. The framework is still being worked on and no membership fees will be collected until it can be run outside of Cafecito Caliente. WHY:
DDLM is a statewide leadership and empowerment conference dedicated to the advancement of Latinas. The Día de la Mujer Conference began in 1994 and has become an institution in the Midwest region for the empowerment of thousands of Latinas that have attended each year. The success of this community initiative is due to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers and sponsors each year. The goal of the conference is to empower, motivate, inspire, train, and work collectively to expand opportunities for Latinas and all women. According to the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics – Latinas in the U.S. (2015), Latinas have the lowest high school graduation rate compared to other major subgroups and are less likely to complete a college degree. Furthermore, the college completion rate is 19 percent compared to nearly 44 percent of white women. Many of the barriers that hold Latinas back relate to poverty and access to health and education. Historically, Latina women experience more adversity and challenges on their paths to success than women do from other cultural/language groups and this conference aims to close the gaps that exist.
DDLM has been disseminating information & data driven strategies to attendees through a series of informative workshops, keynote speakers, and exhibitions. Each year we offer over 30 workshops that focus on business, finance, education, health, community development, inter-personal growth, self-empowerment, STEM, and leadership. DDLM is open to everyone regardless of cultural identification, gender or ethnicity and serves as a great cross-cultural learning experience. Please share this wonderful opportunity with your networks!
