LANSING – Mayor Andy Schor today announced that he is running for reelection to serve a second term as Mayor of Lansing.
Schor was first elected in 2017 on a platform of Economic and Community Development, Neighborhoods, City Service and Infrastructure, and working with Lansing Schools.
Under Schor’s leadership, Lansing has experienced significant growth while navigating unexpected crises. Neighborhoods received a renewed focus and investment, streets and potholes have been repaired, Lansing partnered with its schools, and the city experienced significant growth with over $1.5 billion in investments. During the last three years, Schor helped create many new amenities to enhance quality of life for Lansing residents, including a new downtown grocery store, new parks like Beacon SW and Rotary Park, housing for a variety of incomes throughout the city, and other successes.
During Schor’s tenure, Lansing was named the number one affordable city to live in the United States based on high quality of life and low cost of living, as well as one of the top cities to live in after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Schor is successfully leading Lansing through unprecedented times. Schor’s administration created new programs to assist small businesses, created new resources for struggling homeowners and renters, provided additional shelter and housing options for the homeless, and collaborated with regional partners to assist others in need. He navigated mid-year budget reductions as a result of the pandemic without layoffs or major cuts to City services. And Schor has prioritized making Lansing an inclusive place for all by bringing together local leaders to create and implement a community focused Racial Justice and Equity Plan.
But his work is not finished.
“I am running for a second term because the work of growing Lansing, especially through the COVID-19 pandemic, must continue. We need to update our old infrastructure, ensure safety and security of our residents, build our neighborhoods, create jobs and vibrancy throughout our city, and work with our schools. Significant progress has been made, but there is more work to do and I will continue to pour my heart and soul into Lansing,” Schor stated. “I have healed relationships within the city and with partners throughout the region, and I will continue to work collaboratively towards making Lansing a diverse, dense, livable, and welcoming environment for residents at every stage in life. We will accomplish the goals of the Lansing 2030 plan to grow all parts of Lansing and make Lansing its best self!”
Brian Daniels, a Lansing native and owner of EmPOWer Lansing, introduced Schor in his announcement video. Daniels, a small business owner and combat-wounded Iraq war veteran, voiced his early support for Schor.
“Andy Schor has been a thoughtful leader, digging deep to find solutions to the problems we face in city government. What we can’t risk now is moving backward. Andy Schor is the leader to take us forward and help Lansing continue to thrive,” Daniels said.
Schor thanked Daniels and agreed that now is not the time to move backwards for the city of Lansing.
“I have paid millions of dollars in bills left to me from the previous administration, which have put the City in a tough financial situation. I have also started addressing the massive unfunded liabilities left to the City from the prior administration, resolving $80 million of the problem. At the same time, I have been able to sustain the growth of our city while helping those in need. I will continue to address our challenges to improve Lansing, ensuring we have a city that we take pride in. When the amazing residents of Lansing come together, we can’t lose.”

Saturday, July 24th, 2021. Mark the date and buy your tickets! For the love of tacos, and a good time, the Kalamazoo Growlers Baseball Team and Outlier Events are hosting this crazy event highlighting local food vendors for their unique take on the versatile taco along with a tequila sampling bar, exotic mixed drinks, and festive entertainment.
To provide a safe, socially distant experience for festival-goers and decrease wait time in lines, the event will likely be broken into waves. The first admission waves will be for VIP ticket holders only and will include more exclusive and rare tequilas to sample. The second round of waves will be for General Admission ticket holders.

Press Release: Dear Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan Stakeholders,
Dr. Felipe Lopez Sustaita, Executive Director of the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan (HLCOM), has announced he accepted a position at Lansing Community College. His last day with the commission will be May 14, 2021. Felipe has led the HLCOM for almost five years, since July of 2016.
While serving as Executive Director of the HLCOM, Felipe founded the Statewide Hispanic/Latino College Graduation Ceremony and worked with the commission to award approximately 100 scholarships to college and university students across the state. Felipe also drove over 50,000 miles to conduct community outreach and recently played an active role in ensuring that the Hispanic/Latino community has access to COVID-19 vaccines.
Felipe said that it has been an honor and privilege to serve in this role. He went on to say that the best part of the job was all the people he had the opportunity to meet across the state and the chance to cultivate the young professionals who he worked with: Daniel Carreon-Camberos, Jose Luis Mendez, Ana Manzano, Clarissa Mezquitic, Janet Ibarra and Dr. Patrica Jaimes.
Felipe will be starting his new role as Associate Dean of Student Support at Lansing Community College on May 17, 2021. In his role he will be leading seven departments which include Adult Resource Center, the Center for Student Access, Counseling, Veteran and Military Affairs Department, Fostering Stars, Office of Student Compliance and Global Student Services.
We thank Felipe for his invaluable service to the statewide Hispanic/Latino community and look forward to seeing the impact of his continued work at Lansing Community College.

Footprints of Michigan, was established in 2014 after attending a street walk with a local organization in Lansing, Michigan. I noticed a young homeless man in desperate need of shoes; his duct-taped soles were worn and tattered. A street walk participant contacted her husband and he promptly delivered a size 13, gently used, pair of shoes. The young man’s face lit up as he threw his old, worn pair of shoes in curbside trash can and it filled my heart with hope and joy…. and so, the idea began.
Inspiration behind the name was inspired by my late parents, Geronimo Jr. and Maria C. Lerma. My father was a double leg amputee due to diabetes and always told me, “Mijo (son), always take care of your feet because they will help make your journey a little smoother.” One day caring for my mother, I noticed the kitchen curtains had an imprint of The Footprints in the Sand poem.
A light bulb went off in my mind and the name Footprints of Michigan was born. The unique design created by talented friend Brandyn Armstrong of B Unique Designz assisted in creating the Footprints of Michigan logo, which perfectly represents our cause to assist individuals in Michigan with new and gently used footwear.
