The Lansing Lugnuts officially launched a new era directly connected to the Hispanic/Latino community here in Lansing for the 2019 season. On Friday, May 3-5 and again on Sunday, August 18th during the annual Latino Day with the Lugnuts coordinated by Cafecito, the team will switch uniforms to the Lansing Loco’s. A big three day weekend is planned with vendors, food trucks, Tejano music, a baseball clinic for kids just to name a few things. With some history, a birthday celebration and fireworks mixed in, it promises to be a weekend to remember.
A total of 72 teams across Minor League baseball are set to participate in the “Copa de la Diversión,” or “Fun Cup,” a season-long event series in 2019. The San Antonio Missions will become the San Antonio Flying Chanclas, Corpus Christi Hooks become the Raspas, and the Fresno Grizzles become the Fresno Lowriders. The Lansing Lugnuts decided to jump aboard with a similar rally cry from the traditional “Let’s Go Nuts” to “Vamos Locos” cry that you will hear this season.
A group of folks from the local Latino community were invited by the Lansing Lugnuts to come up with a plan to not only celebrate the culture, but to have some fun at the park. Latinos make up over 25% of Major League Baseball, so it only made sense to the Lugnut team to develop a relationship with the Latino community. Mark your calendars for May 3-5 for the Cinco de Mayo Celebration and again for August 18th with the “Latino Day with the Lugnuts”.
