Beautiful weather, a great turnout, perhaps a day off from work, all made for a great program that is slowly becoming a machine for producing productive and highly qualified citizens for the Greater Lansing Community. The Greater Lansing Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GHLCC) held its 2nd Annual Golf Scramble Friday, September 19th at Forest Akers West on the Campus of Michigan State University. In an era of a million golf outings, the GHLCC Golf Scramble offers a unique channel into the Greater Lansing Latino community by drawing in leaders from the business community as well as the Latino community at large. Many local companies and organizations took advantage of this as sponsorship for the event increased over last year. Proceeds from the event went to the Michigan State University College Assistance Migrant Program Scholars Initiative (CAMP). CAMP is an educational program that offers individuals with migrant or seasonal farm work backgrounds, a unique opportunity to begin an undergraduate program in MSU. This program offers the best conditions in order to help students. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, CAMP was initiated in 2000 and is a unique program designed to service incoming migrant and seasonal farm worker students at Michigan State University. CAMP Executive Director Luis Garcia stated although many of our students come from other States, many graduate and stay in Michigan. Felipe Lopez Jr. who heads the up the LUCERO Program at Lansing Community College, is one of those students having recently received his Masters Degree. The focus of the LUCERO program is to create a positive connection for Latino students at Lansing Community College and Felipe has been a great leader, example and friend to the many students that the once dormant LUCERO Program has impacted since he took over. Jose Yanez, President of the GLHCC, mentioned that 2015 will be even bigger as he and the GLHCC staff continue to build relationships within the Latino community as well as pull in the non-Latino community. The GLHCC was founded with the intention of increasing the visibility, support and networking opportunities of Michigan Hispanic leaders and entrepreneurs. Jose hinted at some exciting news to be released soon so make sure you head to the Facebook page to stay updated!
